Metropolis Public Transport Racer

Check this out -

Who knew you could drive buses and taxis and freakin' LAWNMOWERS in MSR? I certainly didn't! To be fair, seeing as I only ever managed to get as far as Chapter 13 or thereabouts in my crappy Vauxhall Astra, I shouldn't really be so surprised...but this awesome Youtube video has made me want to jump back into MSR and give it another go.

As a side note, I heard that once you beat every chapter you get to drive around each city in a sort of 'free ride' mode, with all the barriers removed. Anyone out there know if this is true? Answers in the comments section, please.

Hahaha wow I did not know about this either! Never got far in the game at all but I could always download a complete save file of it to try it out. Love how all the road gets changed to grass for the lawnmowers, such attention to detail!

Brilliant eh?! I always thought MSR was one of those games that took itself way too seriously. How wrong I was!

Also, I've updated the Favicon to a little PAL swirl, but it only appears to show up if you use Safari, Firefox or IE. Opera crashes before I can check it works (?!) and Chrome refuses to show it. Go figure.

I have completed MSR and I can confirm that a free roam option is available but only in single player.
I like to use this feature by driving the yellow cab around one of the San Francisco districts as a semi realistic Crazy Taxi.
However I do not recall the road changing colour when racing with the lawnmower.
This game was by far my favourite racer and I thought MSR and Project Gotham Racing 4 would make a better comparison for the DC versus XBox 360 video.

^^^ This. I was always under the impression rally 2 was a CE game and lacking in graphical quality because of it?

StraightJacket - any chance you could make a recording of that and put it on Youtube? Also, yeah - I have considered doing an MSR/Project Gotham comparison, but it would mean going out and buying PGR 3 or 4, and frankly, I could better spend that £5 on a 6 pack of lager. You know how it is!

Brian - I agree, maybe Rally 2 wasn't the best comparison to do, but it's hardly ever been mentioned here at the 'Yard, so thought it was time to give it a bit of time in the spotlight!

Thanks for featuring my video! In case you're wondering, the green road or 'Grass' option is activated within the Cheat menu. You need to complete Chapter 23 to unlock it...or grab a completed save file! :)

I completely understand Tom, I just worry that people who missed out on the Dreamcast will see a video like this and think "wow that system doesn't look too hot". In comparison videos most people try to show off the graphical comparisons so in this case it would be like saying "look how close in quality these two games are from different gens." :)

I've found the grass cheat.
Tomleecee, I don't have a youtube account however in the new year I will consider one, as a platform for my Art jibber jabber.

I never got very far in that game, looks like I'll have to get back into it.

Downloaded a complete save file to check this out. All these vehicles are the last ones unlocked and while I haven't figured out how to make the road become grass there is a free roam mode for certain.

Forgotten just how much detail went into the cities in this. London has a good chunk of the correct shops and restaurants including many that are long gone now like Virgin Megastore and Tower Records. Spotted a stage show parody with cameos of characters from Bizarre's other DC game Fur Fighters, and there are posters for the oddball DC game Roommania #203 all over Tokyo!

Any chance of a video of the free-roam mode? Cheers!

Uploading a gameplay video of Free Roam mode now... It should be live at the link below in about 30mins or so.

Video is live now.

I would advise skipping to the 7:20 mark on pcwzrd13's vid to see the free roam mode truly demonstrated.
Pacific Heights is still closed off and a claustrophobic district, although 'long long road' is by far my favourite song from the game. Westminster just isn't as well lit at night as say Trafalgar, however it does illuminate a cool but ignored aspect, the game's international clock. That particular feature I did miss when playing PGR4.

pcwzrd13 - great video, thanks a lot. I can kinda see what straitJacket is saying about the closed off-ness of some of the areas, but it still intrigues me. I'd like to be able to drive around London and have a look at the places I've actually been to. And I must disagree - Live your Life by Salford Keys is by far the best song in the game!

@Tomleecee:
No problem! I'm always happy to fulfill a request for a Dreamcast video :-).

After playing Blur, I was hoping to jump back to MSR. This video made my day!
