They never should have released that Sega CD add on, let alone the 32x. Super expensive and poorly supported, especially the Sega CD. The Saturn would have done much much better without those horrible devices. It's hard to say, but if I didn't feel burnt by the Sega CD I may have been super excited for the Saturn release, I may have been camping out on launch day. If the Saturn sold well then EA might have made games for the Dreamcast.

My first impression of the Dreamcast couldn't have been better. IMHO Soul Calibur was the biggest leap in graphical improvement in home console history. It wasn't just the graphics, but the fluidity of the movements was top notch. My brother and I played it all day when we got it, and my whole family (the ones who have never played a video game in their life) was happy watching. They were just as impressed as we were and were entertained watching.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07187892977132661983noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19634944.post-14248527608930576912015-03-14T19:24:02.527+00:002015-03-14T19:24:02.527+00:00I think going in day one from japanese launch was ...I think going in day one from japanese launch was a mistake for me. Like I said, great games came but they took a little while. It was clearly a desperate launch and their own games were not ready at all.

Also no doubt it offered some of the best game play around but only in certain genres. Nothing ever came close to Ocarina, Perfect Dark, ISS Pro, GT etc. Although it did offer genre leading shooters and fighters as well as lots of other great titles.

Fully agree regarding the DC delivering that arcade experience. Sadly I wanted more substance for want of a better word. Although we know arcade games are a deep as any genre, just more repetitive in design.

Either way, the DC offers a lot. I'm glad I stopped ignoring the fanboys to enjoy the system again.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11720419750816541099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19634944.post-84363064594617766512015-03-14T19:22:36.936+00:002015-03-14T19:22:36.936+00:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11720419750816541099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19634944.post-34324759207511561762015-03-12T09:23:39.872+00:002015-03-12T09:23:39.872+00:00All very good points but more of a point of view.
...All very good points but more of a point of view.

I agree on two points I did wish the Dreamcast controller didn't remove 2 buttons that the Saturn 3D controller had and there is something to be said about failure rate however personally my Dreamcast has been rock solid as long as I didn't play burned discs on it

My personal experience is wayyyyy different to yours.
When I first had the Dreamcast as a long time Sega Saturn fan I wanted everything the Sega Saturn had promised the Arcade perfection in the home 32bit gaming was the start because I had not experienced Arcade perfection before with games like Street Fighter Alpha being like nigh on indentical however not understanding as a kid that consoles aren't as powerful as the Arcades was kind of disappointed with the the bridge in Shuns stage Virtua Fighter 2 being absent.
Next came the Dreamcast it was amazing blew my mind as an owner of the PS1, Sega Saturn and N64 at the time I was gob smacked at having this Arcade machine at home it had perfect graphics like rendered CG visuals perfect smooth graphics no jagged edges.
It delivered exactly what they said it would the Arcade to home ports were unprecedented and it often received the best port of games at the time.
Rayman 2, Soul Reaver, Shadowman, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Vrally 2 to name a few plus games that you couldn't dream of on the PS1 and Sega Saturn like Virtua Fighter 3, Sega Rally 2, Street Fighter 3rd Strike.

To me to own a Dreamcast during that period was to experience the best in gaming and nothing on the previous consoles could contend in terms of gameplay in my favourite genres and especially not graphics.
Arcade ports were and still are my thing because unlike most games today designed to be long those games were designed to be replayed.

Having an Arcade in the home was something I had always wanted since the advertising on promotional flyers of Sega Master System games and on TV about Arcade perfection or close to the Arcade / Coinop.

So the Dreamcast delivered on that promise in spades however the industry and gamers had changed Arcade in the home wasn't what gamers craved they became accustomed to longer experiences and to that extent it's still something that gamers use as a measure today how long a game is a term like 40 hours of gameplay is used to describe a games selling feature.

I think the Dreamcast was a swansong to fans of the Sega Saturn that couldn't fully deliver on it's promises this is where the Dreamcast fully made up for it IMOWWammyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11671949870616567820noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19634944.post-56465672319941713762015-03-10T23:55:59.131+00:002015-03-10T23:55:59.131+00:00Completely agree with you on that the PS2 felt fin...Completely agree with you on that the PS2 felt finnished and professional.
I remember feeling that exact feeling when it first came out.
And about the dreamcast's controller, nvm the solo stick, the thing about it is the first emotion
you feel, like the first time you actually grab it, is frightened surprise of disappointment.
Once you're used to holding it you start to like it. But still the first experience is hardly positive.
I remember a friend's reaction when he threw it on the table and exclaimed:
"Ow! That's disgusting! But.. how can this be? It looks SO COMFORTABLE!?"
That's a perfect expression for what the DC controller is: it looks SO COMFORTABLE but is actually just ok and seems countierintuitive at start.fanathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01484658397818238373noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19634944.post-74194358441052950672015-03-10T09:51:20.792+00:002015-03-10T09:51:20.792+00:00I think the fact that the Dreamcast was Sega's...I think the fact that the Dreamcast was Sega's last system has definitely added to its mystique now and, in part, re-written its legacy.

Sega did almost everything right with the Dreamcast, however it was a victim of a mass shift in the industry as a whole. With Sony entering the fray with the PS1 - and doing a damn good job with their first system - the game changed and, with Sega still reeling from the commercial failure of the Saturn, couldn't then deal with Sony dropping what would become the best selling console of all time. One that, crucially, included the Holy Grail of the time, a DVD player.

Regardless, I think Martin hits on the real reason to own a Dreamcast both then and now - import titles.Robert Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05624727645600770252noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19634944.post-53416263163887679362015-03-10T09:35:37.744+00:002015-03-10T09:35:37.744+00:00Yeah. Build quality on DC hardware is actually alot better compared to the reputation its received in such respect.

Many who know me consider me to be one of the most hardcore DC fan out there. But at then end of the day, I still own enjoy and play PS2, Saturn, 360 and so on. Many systems have something unique to offer to ones gaming experience.

I enjoyed this post. It had a happy ending. Only a few posts back we featured the story of a Dreamcast found in the woods that still worked after a clean; and likewise I personally have never had a console fail on me apart from the one I bought that was already broken...Tom Charnockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05593308178739317252noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19634944.post-9973669565384477632015-03-09T23:30:22.961+00:002015-03-09T23:30:22.961+00:00Soccer..Soccer game We dont care about no stinking...Soccer..Soccer game We dont care about no stinking soccer lol..Didnt the DC have like 3 soccer games..The DC doesnt have high failure rates my original launch DC just started to fail..it still works but its real fussy in which games it wants to read.. I to found a DC that was sitting in the closet in a suitcase that I have no idea how it got there..Found it last Summer plugged her up and works perfectly..This was at my old house..So it couldve been sitting there for a long time..The PS2 had extremely high failure rates..I admit the VMU was a bit gimmicky but i still love the thing. I dont have a problem with the DC joystick only wonder why Sega didnt put the excellent Saturn D-Pad instead of the one it came with. As well all know the Xbox controller is based on the DC, If it wasnt for Sega departure im sure they would of upgraded the DC controller in time. Sega was the innovator Sony just improved on their ideas..Its a byproduct of been the first to the scene.nocarpaymenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16659927065474014366noreply@blogger.com
