SHHHHHHHHHHH!!

It occurred to me last night just how noisy the Dreamcast actually is. Not only does it make that beep when you turn it on (due to the VM's batteries being dead for about 4 years), the cacophony it releases during disc accessing is ridiculous. I'd not actually noticed it before, but I was playing MSR into the small hours and the way it reads the disc is LOUD. And the fan is louder than my PC's.
I'm almost certain that my Xbox was'nt this loud, and neither was my Gamecube. Come to think of it, I'd wager that the DC is the loudest console ever to be released. Perfect for the Disaster Area tour bus. Another feather in the cap, and here's a quickly knocked together table to show the decibel levels of an operating DC in relation to (the most noteable of) the last 10 years worth of hardware (look up). Note: The Jaguar, 3D0 and CDi aren't incuded because they were shite and don't deserve a place on even the most rudimentary of charts.

  1. It was rather amusing. The loudest I ever heard it was when it was playing Grandia 2's (low quality) fmv. The disc read was like "we-we-we-w-wee-we--wee-wee-wee", well you know what it sounds like. I guess the GD-ROM system was entirely designed by Sega, they couldn't just pick a DVD player off the shelf.

    ....
Although GC's was designed too, and was quiet. I suppose the tech was 3 years newer on the GC.

  2. Yeah, its pretty loud! Did you manage to get a copy of propellor arena? I will get it eventually, but £15 is a sizeable chunk of cash for a DC game (I only payed £6.00 for Red Dog, Ready 2 Rumble 2 and Chu Chu Rocket from gamestation).

  4. fair comment. The boxes and stuff look pretty authentic though. I havnt actually bought anything off him yet - I wanted HL, but I heard that the DC version is only about 95% complete and this has lead to the version that is availible being really slow and buggy with some horrendous loading times. I'll give it a whirl when I've got the cash though.

  7. Owning 2 Dreamcasts, I've noticed the sound seems to be different depending on the model. The one I bought back near the launch is very loud, but one I picked up at a bootsale in almost perfect nick is actually rather quiet. Odd, that.
