Radilgy / Rajiruji / Radirgy

Radilgy or Radirgy, shortened from Radio Allergy, the proposed North American release (Rajiruji in Japanese ラジルジ) is a vertical shooter released late into the Dreamcast's official life; February 16 2006.

In addition to the game, which could only be bought through SEGA Direct in Japan in 2006 (how I ordered mine) is a phone card for use in Japan. This was quite frequent with releases in Japan through SEGA Direct, but seems more fitting in this game as you essentially play a girl (or boy) that has to rescue her father from terrorists so she (or he) can get the medicine for their radio allergy. Mental I know, but this is Japan!

So, how does it fair with the other Dreamcast shooters? (what shooters I hear you ask??). Well, it's pretty solid, but it's no Ikaruga - but what is. The styling of the game is pretty unique; cell shaded graphics (think Jet Set Radio) over VGA really make the Dreamcast seem like it was released in 2006. If you're a collector, or just into shooters; I would heavily recommend this game. There's a really fun soundtrack to the game as well - which is a refreshing change as many shooters decide to go down the 'dark and dismal' route.

There's a variety of button commands, including shoot, bomb and a like of sword attack. This adds hugely to the strategy of the game. The casing of the game shows off some of the attention to detail given within the game. It's hard to think a title of this quality was released so late in the [official] life of our beloved Dreamcast.

So sure that this would be a great title; I bought two. Yes, that's right, I have a sealed copy up for sale on eBay and you can bid on it here. I'll leave you with a little gameplay video. Enjoy!

Played this for a bit once, but at the time I wasn't really into shmups (unlike now), so I probably didn't appreciate it as much as I should. Gotta give it another try.

And yes, according to the game that's a girl...go figure...

Looks like a pretty crazy game! And it came out in 2006?? Well, I'll have extra money to spend on crazy Dreamcast games now that I LOST an ebay action for De La Jet Set Radio. Just happened 5 minutes ago. :(

This game was amongst that modded Japanese Dreamcast bundle I got last year. It's not a bad game but boy do I hate TATE screen modes. At least give us an option to fill the screen without having to flip our telly on it's side! The graphics are kind of fuzzy in the shrunk bordered mode too.

It's gets rather mad about five minutes in and hard to tell what's going on. I prefer even this to Ikaruga though; what a head ache inducing game that is. My favourite shmups on Dreamcast are actually the Gigawing games and Mars matrix.

My favourite is probably Gunbird 2. The Dreamcast wasn't that good for shmups, especially compared to the Saturn

Owning pretty much any of the shmups for the Saturn is nothing more than a pipe dream for me, they all go for so much money except for the odd one or two like Darius Gaiden and er....Darius II.

Would one need a modded console to play such a game, or is it region-free?

A boot disc is all you need to play imports on a Dreamcast. I just have a modded system so I don't need to disc swap because I'm lazy. :P

マーティン said...

@the golden cat - you need either a Japanese (NTSC-J) console or a boot disc to play on a PAL or NTSC-US unit

Cool, thanks. (It's so obvious now.) To ebay!....

@The Golden Cat:
I recommend the DC-X boot disc. I've had mine for 8 years and it still works like a dream, and with no problems as of yet after testing 45 games. No bells and whistles, just a solid boot disc.

Hmm, well I do have a boot disc, but it has no branding on it. I assume that'll work. Taaah.

wow another post by マーティン with the intention of selling an ebay item. y am i not surprised

マーティン said...

@ Anonymous, go fuck yourself.

For everyone else: the intention was not to sell the item, I am currently selling many things anyway, regardless of the blog. I can either take some nice photos and write about it, then link to the sale or not bother with any of the above. Being as most people seem to leave a few interesting comments and discuss the games, I'll continue. Happy Dreamcasting!

Yep - continue!

Cheers Tom. You're the rightful owner of the blog, so the final say is yours.

I remember reading the odd post from you that would be a one-liner or small paragraph linking to other (randomers) eBay auctions for games or controllers, and I remember thinking how useful that was.

Jesus! WTF is going on? Yet another good post and yet more bitching!
Anonymous - just fuck off - it would seem you only come here to criticize.
As long as TLC aint moaning - which BTW he is NOT - there isn't a problem. Ho hum!

TLC might be moaning about MUFC's disgraceful and lack-lustre performance on Wednesday night however... now that IS something to get angry about...

Its never bothered me because the spheres of ebay and the Dreamcast are inextricably linked these days. I got every piece of Dreamcast equipment I own off ebay.

GameStop to XBOX 360 is like ebay to Dreamcast. It's really the largest "retailer" of Dreamcast games. I have no problem linking to ebay, in fact I welcome it!

Caleb said...

That was an excellent article!

Nobody should have a problem with it.

It was three huge paragraphs talking about the game and a gameplay video.

It was not just a personal ebay link.

I honestly do not understand why the hell someone would have a problem with this.

It's not like he embedded code that created a popup window that FORCES you to go to the ebay site or anything.

@Caleb - now *there* is an idea!
