The Japan-Only Magic: The Gathering Game for the Sega Dreamcast has been Translated into English

Over the years, I've built up somewhat of a personal wishlist of Sega Dreamcast games I'd love to see translated into English, with Atlus' horror-RPG DeSpiria sitting firmly at the top, a choice I'm sure plenty of others also hold. Something a bit more niché I've been quietly rooting for though is the Japan-only Magic: the Gathering game, which simulates the long-running trading card game from Wizards of the Coast.

Quite why Japan was the only region in the world to receive this Dreamcast game based on MTG is something I've always pondered, and not found much information about online. Were Wizards of the Coast merely trying to find a way to promote the game to the Japanese Populus? I don't really know the answer to that question, kind of like how I know nothing about Magic: The Gathering. I own a starter deck that my friend gave me with the intention to play, but never got around to learning the rules.

But I guess now people can learn how to play Magic on their Dreamcasts, because a Dreamcast-Talk user by the name AstraLee has translated the game into English. In the past, those familiar with the game and the English versions of the cards —the game even featured ten exclusive cards— could muddle their way through, but this will now make play for newbies like myself way more accessible. In fact, this seems to be kind of how AstraLee translated the game themselves, using a number of online MTG resources, along with their own knowledge of Japanese. No AI was used for the English translation itself, although AstraLee does state for the sake of transparency that Claude was used to write some python scripts to extract the original Japanese text and format it into a .CSV file, which was then translated by them.

Still, core fans of the TCG, and I imagine fans of this particular era of the game will love to hear this news. For those who'd like to learn more about the game itself, I highly recommend watching this video from Magic: The Gathering YouTuber "Magic Untapped".
