2018 Dreamcast Releases Teased By JoshProd

In 2017, France-based publisher JoshProd gave the Dreamcast scene a shot in the arm with a host of new releases for the system. With titles ranging from PSP ports in the form of 4x4 Jam and bespoke Dreamcast re-masters in the form of Flashback, JoshProd really gave us something to shout about. 2018 will see this trend continue, as several games are set to be unveiled as coming to Sega's console in the next 12 months - some of which we're pretty confident most people have never even heard of, let alone sampled.

In the video below, you'll find some indicators as to the games scheduled to be making the leap to the Dreamcast this year and having played a couple of them we can confirm that 2018 is looking like another bright period for the Dreamcast. You'd better get saving - there are some pretty impressive titles coming our way from a range of genres with shmups, side scrolling adventures, beat 'em ups and 3D racers all represented...

Spot anything here you recognise? Naturally, as soon as the lineup is officially announced and solid release dates are confirmed, we'll be sure to let you know; and we'll do our best to review them as and when we are able.

What do you think? Will you be adding any of these to your collection? Let us know in the comments, in our Facebook group or on Twitter. Follow JoshProd on Facebook too.

Some of these look really cool! It's a shame there's no digital download option on these indy releases for those of us that stopped using disks...

I only recognised Saber Rider (which I already have a pre order for). Was that cave story at the end? Some of those were very neo geo looking I thought.....

Yeah besides Saber Rider (which I guess confirms this year, because the devs are quiet unless they're shilling shirts), I think I saw Sydney Hunter by Collectorvision. The rest of the game I don't recognize at all. But more Neo-Geo games wouldn't surprise me. I guess Visco has a pretty large back catalog.

I think we're entering Limited Run Game territory here, where there are going to be too many releases. Except here we have to worry about emulation quality. I think for me it'll depend on that and the quality of the original game, because I still contend that they charge way too much for these ports.

A couple of the games titles come up in the top corner of the video and the rest I've image reversed to try and find what they are..

The first game shown in the video is Magic Pockets, which released on the Amiga.

The game with the 'Fight Epic Boss Raizara' is called Chronicles of Teddy and is on Steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/341020/Chronicles_of_Teddy/

Gold'n'Blood has a PC demo here https://forzapedro.itch.io/goldnblood-demo

Okinawa Rush was successfully kickstarted last September https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stevex/okinawa-rush-a-platform-fighting-game-with-rpg-ele

The game with the walking gun turret is called Guns of Mercy and is on smartphones.

The one with the spelunker looking dude I remember being announced some years ago for Dreamcast, Mega Drive and a bunch of other consoles but I can't remember the name of it.

DCGX, there's only port on this video :) No emulation.

Thanks Tom and everybody.

So I was looking at the games that The Gagaman(n) listed above and some of them are abandonware or free phone games. I appreciate that these will be available for the beloved Dreamcast but I don't know if paying $50 plus shipping for a free phone game because it's on a dreamcast disc is actually worth it. (even though the packaging is top notch). Do you guy think Joshprod may do compilations with a few games per disc to create better value for money?

Unknown said...

This is a mistake thinking that these games are abandonware, we have to pay license to every studio and some was hard to convince to share their source code (to make crazy thing for them :) port on dreamcast). After that making the port cost also a lots of money.
Gameplay on phone it's just bad without pad that's why i wish to make discover some game to players.
We try to improve all our licenses, some we add music, some we improve picture, some we add more languages, some we pay and expansive cartoonist...

I'm a collector guy and making a compilation is impossible for me. You could find a lot of compilation on isozone.

Thanks for the reply Philippe. As I said I actually appreciate that these are available for a twenty year old console and your packaging is very good. Abandonware was a poor choice of words and I do applaud you for the good work that you are doing. As a crazy collector myself I'm just a little worried about my poor wallet (I took the plunge on all 10 of your previous games). Please don't feel discouraged by my previous comment, I'm was more just curious if it's possible to combine some of the smaller games together on one disc so thank you for letting us know.

If you want some more title details, many games have already been identified here :

I fully agree with DGCX, this is emulation, they call it port as if it is modified and optimized which is not the case..

Thanks Anthony, we'll do our best for this new year ;)

DCGX said...

JoshProd - But some of it is emulation right? And then ported to Dreamcast. Isn't that how the Visco games are done? I remember this very site mentioning it in the 'Breakers' review.

And I think we all understand there is cost involved in licensing, etc., but from a consumer standpoint, it makes little to no sense to pay $30, $40, $50 plus shipping for something that is free or a few bucks on Steam or mobile, especially if the quality of the game itself isn't great.

Now, I mentioned it in previous comments relating to your releases: this is a stepping-stone to bigger and better things. I get that. But man, it's getting hard to swallow (despite the excellent packaging. It really is some of the best this side of redspotgames and NG.Dev).

I've purchased each of your releases so far except '4x4 Jam' because I didn't think it deserved the price, and I was still not quite happy with the price on Ganryu (but at least I got a discount from Play-Asia when also buying 'Flashback'). I think 'Flashback' is how these releases and proper ports should be handled. Otherwise your brand will be diluted.

And while I have you, what the hell is up with your release of 'Saber Rider?!' You must be aware of the anger from the Kickstarter backers to that game (myself included). And the dev just refuses to address these concerns. If the devs were going to go and sign a publishing agreement with preorder prices less than Kickstarter, and what would seem to all be releasing at the same time, what the hell was the point in the Kickstarter?!

Keep it up Josh Prod! Really overwhelmed by your support of the system, and how many games you are getting ported.

That new 3D racer looks so good! I am very happy how improved the graphics are over the 4X4 Jam game!

Unknown said...

Really thanks Anthony817 for your support. This new racing game is really a big project ;)

Unknown said...

Hello DCGX,

ONly Visco's games are emulate, but there's no others ways to release them because nobody have the source code.

I advise you to play at 4x4 jam if you like racing game ;)

About SAber Rider this is not Joshprod managing the communication, as you could see here i reply to all message ;)

FlorreW said...

I just wanted to say i ordered all of your Dreamcast releases (almost) so far and that i am thankful that you support the Dreamcast like you do, please keep the games coming !

Unknown said...

Thank you very much Florian, 2018 will be really amazing ;)

DCGX said...

Right I understand you're not involved with the development of the game, but you probably have a say in how much the game sells for. And like I said, Team Saber Rider isn't talking, which is why, since you were replying here, I thought I'd ask.

Hi JoshProd

Did I see some Amiga magic sprinkled among that line up namely Onescapee and Chaos Engine 2?
I hope so :-)

Also I don't suppose you could get a hold of the Turrican license could you? perhaps an amiga trilogy disc and follow it with a collection of the console versions?

I purchased your Flashback release and it is ace, the definitive version :-)

Keep up the good work.

Like the 3d racer, the shmups and okinawa rush. If these are on dc then im.buying

Anthony817 said...

@Lee Uh, I know what version of Turrican SHOULD be ported and released to the Dreamcast. If possible, porting over that GBA game Turrican 2002 that was also ported to Windows and released as free with more features would be a dream of mine to play. Perhaps Josh could contact the company and see about releasing a physical copy for DC? I sure would love to have it in my personal collection along with Gun Lord! You can download the windows version for free here and see how awesome of a game this would be for the Dreamcast! Simple pixel graphics too shouldn't be hard to do at all.

http://www.pekaro.de/t2002.html

They even have a lever editor where people can make and release their own mods of the game! I think this would be HUGE for the modding community to also extend the life of the game. And since the game is already released for free on windows, no harm done releasing it for free to the community later on too. But of course for those of us that are collectors, we will definitely buy this!

Unknown said...

Hello

I like Turrican also but the company never replied, i will retry ;)

Thanks to everybody.

@JoshProd

Thanks for reading my post and also its cool that you're trying to get hold of Turrican. it is a classic franchise, they're such good games.. even that Universal Soldier abomination is a little fun :-D

Keep up the good work and good luck with future endeavours.

Hey Josh, you could add some fps games to the library?
Like Quake2, Duke Nuken 3d or Aliens vs Predator.
I'm sure several people including myself would pay for a quake 2 or duke nuken port for the dc
I guess it would not be so difficult make a dc port with the oficial katana or wince devkit.
