I'll never be able to look at a Dreamcast controller the same way again..

To most people, this photo above is just a Dreamcast controller. To those who have been playing Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, which just released on the PS3, XBOX 360 and Wii U recently, and has played that game quite far in, it probably means a extra bit more.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, and do not mind being spoiled probably the coolest unlockable in a Sega game for about a decade, and also need a solid piece of evidence why you as a Sega fan must own this game, check out the video after the jump..

Don't say I didn't warn you!

and a bonus photo of a victory in the gran prix..

Yep - that controller boat is very cool. I also like the nod to Rez with the visual effects too...it's just a shame the Hornet doesn't get busted up like it does in the Daytona games!

Disclaimer: This post was written while under the influence of alcohol.

Seeing stuff like this makes me wonder how many of the developers that worked on games like this were working for Sega back in the Dreamcast days, if any.

Either somebody on the dev team realizes how much love still exists for the Dreamcast, or someone from back then is still around and has the pull to include something like this in new releases.

At the same time, it makes me really sad that there would be so many younger people playing this game, thinking "What the hell did my car just turn in to?" and "Why does a dancing gameboy appear at the end?".

The Wii U port just made me realize there is now a whole generation between the upcoming current-gen and the Dreamcast era.

Bitter sweet, as always...

Hmmm - I was planning to wait a bit to get this, but it's now moved to an instant buy. It's funny that people think Sega (or specifically, Sega of America) hates the Dreamcast because they've been pretty lame at honoring its memory. If you talk to folks at Sega today, they KNOW all about the love for the console (they read all that email they get).

Of course, the chances of seeing anything other than first-party DC references will be slim to none, as those would be up to all those publishers (some of whom aren't around any more or have moved on to other things).

Eh, maybe one day we'll get a DEFINITIVE Dreamcast history from Sega that features every first-party game made (not just the usual stuff they keep kicking out the door) and a great set of interviews, music and artwork. I'd buy that set in a heartbeat.

I must own this game now. Too bad I didn't see this video BEFORE I finished my Christmas list. Wonder if I can entice my wife to buy it...

I loved the little Dreamcast jingle after the car transformed.
