The DreamTablet

It seems we don't go a month now without hearing about someones ingenius Dreamcast mods: last time it was a Dreamcast shoved inside a iMac monitor, and now from the creator of this Dreamcast handheld comes the DreamTablet, a DC inside a 15" tablet screen thingy, complete with the GD-Rom drive as a very speedy slot loader in the side (I think that in itself may be a first), and controller ports in the other side. It can be plugged into a telly and has a battery life of about 3 hours or so. More photos and details over at the Benheck forums, as well as a video below. One of these days there will be a kitchen sink with a Dreamcast built into it!

Christ - first it's a DC SD card adaptor, now there's a flatscreen model...the possibilities are obviously endless when it comes to adapting the technology of the console. Does anyone reckon SEGA actually knows about the massive underground scene attached to the Dreamcast? There's so much development going on that if they wanted to, I'm sure they could turn the DC into a successful open source GP2X-style console, even in today's mainstream-obsessed market. C'mon SEGA - open your eyes!

The awesomeness of the tablet combined with the epic FAIL screen from HOTD2 made me laugh.

As for DreamSink, I'll get back to you on that after a trip to Home Depot.

I don't want to be a downer here but we must remember that Sega hasn't been run by educated individuals in a long while. Remember when they canceled Streets of Rage 4 for the Dreamcast? Sega of America's executives were oblivious about the popularity of the SOR franchise. When I read that I couldn't believe it but thats the facts. So lets not get our hopes too high.

Wow.

That's a hell of a nice CD tray setup!!!!

Franco: it wasn't canceled, rather it wasn't even approved to begin with. That footage of the game that you can find is just pre-rendered proof of concept for get Sega's approval, which they didn't get probably because it looked shit. I don't think Sega are the heartless bastards the Internet loves to think they are, but bashing them seems to be a craze at the moment.

Just a thought, but I'm guessing the as the Dream Tablet has an LCD screen, the hardware is actually outputting through VGA mode right? What do you do if you want to play a non-VGA game?! Not trying to put a downer on this awesome creation, just thinking out loud

Animated AF said...

I was actually thinking that too when watching the video? maybe you can play the non-VGA games with the AV to TV output he added?

Yeah, was thinkin that myself but it kind of defeats the object dunnit? It's still one goddamn sexy bit of kit though - imagine firing that badboy up on the train. DS? PSP? Noooooooooooo....Dreamcast MOTHERFUCKER!!! Cough.

Haha I would actually buy that.

TheGagaman(N)I'm not bashing them I'm just saying that Sega, like many other corporations have tunnel vision that effects their customer relations / preformance.

By them knowingly axing one of their most popular franchises means they were really in another world, at least mentally.

But as I said, lets not get our hopes too high that Sega will finally come to their senses.

I'm impressed that Franco actually went to the trouble of putting the extra 'n' in brackets! Kudos.

That extra (n) really adds some class to the name you know.

Animated AF said...

It's in brackets because it's optional! :)

Franco: I wasn't directly referring to you bashing Sega, more just the Internet's bee hive mentality in general. The closet tghing Sega had to a new 3D Streets of rage was Spikeout in arcades, which sadly only got one un-noticed port on the X-Box. They could take that game, replace the characters with Axel Blaze etc and get Yuzo Koshiro back in for the soundtrack and it'd be heaven.

Off topic but the Wind and Water Rummage video is ever so close to being ready to upload!I had to re-start all the editing and voice work for it, hence why it's taken so long (that and I animated a new Rummage title). :)
