Who Dat? Dreamcast: Not the Console - the Anime Lady!

Did anyone here watch the anime SEGA Hard Girls last year? It was a short lived 13-episode series of only 11 minutes a pop, and starred the Mega Drive, Sega Saturn and Dreamcast as school girls attending a Sega high school where they are warped into games like Space Channel 5, Jet Set Radio and Virtua Fighter to earn medals. It's a very odd premise, and I'm really surprised that in this day and age, and so long after Sega stopped making consoles that they would make something like this. That said, it is so full of in-jokes for hardcore Sega fans it's hard not to like.

This video by friend of mine DiGi Valentine is a review/analysis of sorts of the character that represents the Dreamcast, detailing her design, personality and importance to the anime series. DiGi does a particularly good job of explaining her ditzy, zany attidtude attributed to the fact that she has a built in modem like the console. If you liked the video, go to DiGi's channel to see more character reviews including plenty of other Dreamcast icons such as Ryo from Shenmue, several Street Fighters and even Big the Cat.

I did watch it, and I thought it was pretty cool. The use of the original games and characters and the casting of Yuji Naka makes a proper piece of Sega lore. So much so, if you aren't a Sega fan, the series has little to offer, which is my main point of criticism.

If region restrictions allow it you can watch the series on Crunchyroll:

Anime World Order did a podcast on the series as well:

I was pretty impressed with how much I enjoyed this series, really. I don't really subscribe to much Anime, but this was just funny, and quite sincere in its service of fans and the SEGA back-catalog. I laughed at the Virtua Fighter bit where they won every fight doing a head bonk, and I smiled at all the hundreds of SEGA IPs that were referenced :)

I don't normally post things like this, but I think that the series will never see release in the West, or the UK for that matter, so I can without guilt share a link to the series:

Keep up the good work -- good video!

Discotek Media is releasing this series in the West on DVD and Blu-ray sometime in the next year and a half. The company announced this in January/February 2015. Later they followed up to ask fans to ask questions on their Facebook page for them to use as questions in a Q&A segment with the Japanese creators as a video bonus on the western home video release.

For more details, see Discotek Media's Facebook post on the matter.
